Undergraduate Nursing Placements

We are focused on increasing capacity within GPs for student nurse placements.

Info for Practices

Student nurses are the future! We are focused on increasing capacity within GPs for student nurse placements. By doing this we are exposing pre-reg nurses to the amazing opportunities that working in general practice offer, making it more likely they would choose to return on qualifying. We are aware of the constraints facing primary care, and we work with practices across South East London to make placements as accessible, efficient and beneficial as possible.

Expectation

  • Students will be expected to work 37.5 hours per week
  • Practices will provide adequate supervision for students in order to meet needs of learning outcomes.
  • Practice assessor will have blocked time to complete students e-pads, interviews and teaching. Financial reimbursement for the reduced appointments will be received on completion of placement.

Reimbursement to practices

Practices will receive £122.54 per week - the National Placement Tariff. Additional funding may be available.

Information for Practice Assessors and Supervisors (PA &PS)

Workbooks

We have created workbooks based on the students year of study. Theses workbooks are to be used in practice and are not additional work to complete at home. The aim of them is to offer some structure to the students learning and support the PA / PS in teaching.

The workbook can be used for independent learning whilst the PA is undertaking tasks such as administrative work that they may not feel beneficial for the student to observe.

E-pad

The student will need parts of their E-pad completed throughout their placement. It is their responsibility to ensure that all relevant parts are completed within a timely manner. However, the PA/PS will need to make sure that there is assigned time to do this.

Practice Education Sessions

Each student will be invited to join a practice education session either weekly or bi-weekly. This will be with a member of the education team from SELWDH and will consist of structured sessions based on their year of study and relevance to general practice. The aim is to equip them with the knowledge needed to gain the most out of their placement and ensure they are able to actively participate in clinics. These hours will count towards their placement.

A placement in general practice is like no other placement in healthcare! You will be working directly with a clinician who will have knowledge and skills in variety of clinical conditions. In essence they are the ‘specialist generalist’.
