FAQ

For mentees

How do I sign up?

Simply complete the online application form. Choose whether you’d like to be mentored or to serve as a mentor.

You are required to be eligible for the scheme (see above)

You are required to attend any agreed sessions with your mentor and provide feedback when requested

You will be asked to return a Mentee MOU

You can state any preferences in your application form and will be matched with an appropriate available mentor by the scheme lead.

You will have a first introductory session with your mentor and can decide after this if you wish to continue with them as your mentor.

Mentees will be allocated 6 mentoring sessions. It may be possible to provide further sessions after this if requested by mentor and mentee and approved by the Scheme Lead.

GPs on the SPIN New to Practice Fellowship can have 6 mentoring sessions/year for as long as they remain on the Fellowship (usually 2 years).

GP trainees on the VTS scheme are able to have up to 6 mentoring sessions per year of their training.

It is up to Mentor and mentee to arrange their sessions at a mutually convenient time and place (face to face or virtual).

As a guide the mentoring sessions should be once every 1-2 months for 60-90 minutes. But this may depend on the need and development of the mentor to mentee relationship. Any request for more frequent sessions should be submitted to the Scheme Lead.

The mentor can claim up to 1.5 hours for each mentoring session (1 hour mentoring and associated admin time) up to maximum 1 session a week (an hourly invoice). Reimbursement will cover time mentors spend on meeting preparation and follow up administration, travel time to any face to face mentorship sessions, and the mentoring session itself.

We will use the mentor/mentee matching information to fulfil the quantitative evaluation of the scheme.

For qualitative feedback, we will ask you complete a survey on your mentorship experience.

All of this information will be fed back to the national NHSE team.

There may also be national feedback that may be required.

The Mentor and Mentee have the option to stop their mentoring sessions after the introductory session if they feel they do not want to continue.

The mentee can select another mentor, but they can only make one change.

Any requests for change in mentor should be emailed to the mentoring lead.

The Mentor should escalate any issues to their Scheme Lead or within the peer support sessions. The issue can then be discussed and options put forward.
