SELWDH, Londonwide LMC and SLaM are working together to provide South East London primary care staff with access to Oliver McGowan training. In-person sessions will run from late June through to early November at a range of locations, including LSEC Orpington College, Lewisham Hospital and the Royal Bethlem Hospital. SELWDH will manage bookings for these sessions, while the training itself will be delivered by an external provider.
Training Course
Oliver McGowan Training
The training is named after Oliver McGowan. Oliver was a young man whose death shone a light on the need for staff to have training to better understand and respond to the needs of autistic people and people with a learning disability. Its ambition is to ensure health and social care workforce have the right skills and knowledge to provide safe, compassionate and informed care to autistic people and people with a learning disability. Developed as a result of “Right to be Heard”, the government’s response to the consultation on mandatory training on learning disability and autism for health and social care staff. In the Health and Care Act 2022 the government introduced a requirement for CQC-registered service providers to ensure their employees receive learning disability and autism training appropriate to their role.
Tier 1 Sessions
Staff who require a general awareness of people with a learning disability and autistic people and the support they need.
Only relevant to:
• Staff who do not meet the public
• Staff who do not have patient-facing roles.
Tier 2 Sessions
Health and social care staff and others with responsibility for providing direct treatment, healthcare, care and support for a person or people with a learning disability or autistic people, but who would seek support from others for complex management or complex decision-making.
Relevant to:
• Anyone who provides, or who may be required to provide, a service or care to a person with a learning disability or an autistic person, regardless of frequency.
• Staff who have contact with the public.
• Decision-makers for services which may be used by patients with autism or learning disabilities.
