New Training Module: Learning Disabilities and Cancer Care

The South East London Cancer Alliance (SELCA) is excited to announce the launch of a new educational training module designed to support healthcare professionals in improving access to cancer care and screening for people with learning disabilities.

This module has been co-created in collaboration with the Baked Bean Charity and Guy’s Cancer Academy. Importantly, the module has been shaped and informed by the brilliant students from Baked Bean, ensuring it remains authentic and focuses on what matters most to people with a learning disability.

The module supports the improvement of cancer risk mitigation, patient experience, early diagnosis and ultimately better outcomes for this patient population. The module has been designed for all primary care staff, but it does contain information for secondary care colleagues that may need to support someone with a learning disability, by providing the following:

  • Highlighting the additional healthcare needs of people with a learning disability.
  • Effective communication strategies tailored to the patient group.
  • Reasonable adjustments you can implement, to improve accessibility for patients with a learning disability.
  • Best practice in making cancer screening and health checks accessible for patients with a learning disability.
  • How to create and maintain a supportive and inclusive practice environment.
